Joseph C L Tong is a visual artist who creates conceptual works through a variety of media, which includes the traditional elements of oil painting, photography, installation and media art.

His works feature coincidental and accidental connections that explore his sense of identity within Eastern and Western cultures, whilst combining unrelated aspects of everyday experiences that lead to multi-layered analogies.

By experimenting with aleatoric techniques, he formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition that is behind the seemingly random works. The thought processes, which are supposedly private, highly subjective and unfiltered in their references to dream worlds, are frequently revealed as assemblages.

Tong creates situations in which everyday objects are altered or detached from their natural function, applying specific combinations and certain manipulations to inspire different contexts.

His works question the conditions of appearance of an image in the context of contemporary visual culture in which representations and ideas normally function. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives, he reflects on the closely related subjects of archive and memory.
